Harris Tweed Story

Every genuine Harris Tweed garment carries the Orb Mark, proof that the fabric was handwoven in the Outer Hebrides and certified by the Harris Tweed Authority.
Where Tradition Meets Function
Harris Tweed has been woven for generations in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland — not in factories, but in the homes and sheds of independent island weavers. Every inch of cloth is powered by human hands and feet, never electricity, and each bolt must meet the legal definition set by the Harris Tweed Act of 1993.
For us as an American retailer, these coats represent more than a timeless look — they represent workmanship that refuses to cut corners. We source Harris Tweed because it delivers unmatched durability, natural warmth, and a heritage you can feel in the fabric.

A Fabric Defined by the Islands
The process begins with pure new wool from hardy island and Highland sheep. The fibers are dyed, blended, carded, spun into yarn, and prepared for weaving. Each step is handled by craftspeople who specialize in their individual trade — a system refined over a century.
The final weaving, however, is where the true identity of Harris Tweed is formed.

Crafted on Traditional Hattersley Looms
Harris Tweed weaving began on fully foot-powered Hattersley looms, operated entirely by the motion of the weaver’s hands and feet. While the original treadle looms are still iconic, today’s weavers use updated versions of the same heritage machines — still human-powered, still operated at home, and still never automated.
Every bolt of Harris Tweed is woven by a single weaver inside their own shed or home, using equipment that requires skill, rhythm, and constant hands-on control. No industrial mills, no motorized production lines — just island craftsmanship carried forward from one generation to the next.
Wool That Performs in Real Life
Wool has been trusted for centuries because it naturally regulates temperature, resists moisture, and holds its shape. Harris Tweed elevates those qualities through tightly woven structure and centuries of practical innovation from islanders who depended on the cloth in harsh weather.
Our goal at Rainwater’s is simple: offer garments that last longer, feel better, and honor the craft behind them.
